Announcement (April 2021)[]

At the conclusion of the 191st General Conference of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, held on Easter Sunday, 04-Apr-2021, President Russell M. Nelson announced plans to build 20 new temples, including 9 for the United States, the most announced in a single day since 1998. The prophet has now announced 69 new temples in the three years he has served as president of The Church.[1][2]

Yorba Linda, California is a suburban city in the United States about 35 miles southeast of downtown Los Angeles, named after the Yorba family, who owned a 63,000-acre ranch in the early 1800s. More than 750,000 members of the Church reside in California in nearly 1,230 congregations. Latter-day Saint pioneer setters first arrived in California in 1846 and the Mormon Battalion concluded their famous 2,080-mile march in San Diego in 1847. This will be the ninth temple in the Golden State, which already has eight temples operating or under construction. The other temples include the Feather River California Temple (under construction), Fresno California Temple, Los Angeles California Temple, Newport Beach California Temple, Oakland California Temple, Redlands California Temple, Sacramento California Temple, and San Diego California Temple.

The new temple will likely include 8-10 stakes which currently pertain to neighboring temple districts. The Church has reported consistent net decreases in membership in California since 2013 (all-time high for Church membership was reached in 2013 at 780,200). As of year-end 2019, there were 756,507 members, 1,229 congregations, 153 stakes, and 15 missions in California. The Church in California has had at least three distinct periods of membership decline in the past 30 years (early 1990s, mid-2000s, and mid-2010s to present).

Newport Beach California Temple is the busiest smaller temple by far in the Church. Before COVID (2019), there was often a week or two week wait to get into a session. This is one of the reasons why Yorba Linda is getting a Temple. The new Yorba Linda California Temple could take in around 10-12 stakes from the Newport Beach, Redlands, and Los Angeles Temple Districts.
